  • I live close to the memorial and often walk around the site with my dog, the location is a uniquely beautiful one and it is a favourite place of mine, even though I have no personal links with the Battle of Britain
  • It is a moving and emotional experience for some of those who visit as they pick out names of relatives, friends and servicemen they have lost
  • A visit to the Battle of Britain Memorial is a moving experience and one I would recommend to anyone visiting the South East of Kent

The National Memorial to the Few

The Battle of Britain Memorial is located on the White Cliffs between Folkestone and Dover in Kent. The actual location is the village of Capel-le-Ferne. I live close to the memorial and often walk around the site with my dog, the location is a uniquely beautiful one and it is a favourite place of mine, even though I have no personal links with the Battle of Britain.

The memorial holds a very special place in the hearts of local people and the atmospheric location makes this a very moving site to visit.

Historically, the site was used as a base for airships in the 1st world war and there area was an important gun battery and lookout station during the 2nd world war. Aircrew were housed mainly underground at

the site and there was even an underground military hospital built into the landscape. The Army used the memorial site until 1952.

The memorial site is maintained by the Battle of Britain Memorial Trust, and the is dedicated to Churchill’s famous “Few” the airmen who fought in the skies overhead to keep Britain free from invasion.

The Memorial itself inspires quiet reflection on the bravery and sacrifice shown by the aircrew – fewer than 3,000 men – who flew, fought and sometimes died in probably the most crucial battle fought by this country in the whole of the 20th century.

The centre piece is a beautiful life sized sculpture of an airman who sits cross legged watching the skies over the English Channel.

Behind the sculpture is the ‘Christopher Foxley-Norris Memorial Wall’ This black marble wall lists ...

      • the names of all those who took part in the Battle of Britain. It is a moving and emotional experience for some of those who visit as they pick out names of relatives, friends and servicemen they have lost.

There are also replicas of Spitfire and Hurricane aeroplanes on the site which serve as a reminder of the iconic machines of the period and a small gift shop and information centre.

Entrance to the memorial is free and the site can be accessed on foot all day, every day, as a public footpath runs through the site. There are some magnificent cliff top walks adjacent to the memorial land and the views are splendid. France is a mere 22 miles away across the English Channel and on a clear day the French coastline is visible

        to the naked eye.

The free car park and visitor centre are only open from 10 am to 5pm daily from March through to October.

The site can also be opened on request for school visits, memorial services and other occasions.

The site is approached from either Dover or Folkestone on the B2011 at Capel-le-Ferne.

Visitors should be warned that the cliff paths at Capel-le-Ferne can be muddy so sensible footwear is advisable if you intend to wander away from the main memorial site to enjoy the wonderful sea views.

The main paths around the memorial are paved and suitable for both wheelchair users and pushchairs.

A visit to the Battle of Britain Memorial is a moving experience and one I would recommend to anyone visiting the South East of Kent.

Thank you for reading my review.
