I never regret to visit m sister in-law in Belgium, especially when springtime. She said that Carnival de Binche was a famous event over there and I curious to try it. We go by train from Leuven to Binche. This train was crowded with enthusiastic carnival visitor.

At that time map wasn’t too important to recognize where was the carnival event, we just follow the current visitor to go to

Le Grand Place, the field flanked by a city hall in one side and some bars in other side. Over there the top of carnival would take place. Many people threw confetti (colorful little paper cutting) each other.

Many shops closed so that we couldn’t shopping. Only restaurants and souvenir shop was opened and fulfilled by visitor. Visitors wear different theme costume that so gorgeous and make the carnival more lively.

There are any of them played traditional music such as accordion, bell, and tambourine. The top of carnival marked by cortege of the Gilles who was the icon in this town. Gilles is original Binche’s man who was would show in last day of carnival and wear their highness clothes.

They wear orange clothes and pants which had many decorative picture like lion, star, crown in black,

yellow and red color looked like Belgium flag color. Their waist were fulfilled by seven until nine small bell. They wear clog.

They used hat made from white small feather in 1. 5 meter high! That was amazing. I gave information it’s weight until 3 kg made by Gilles closest family.

The top of carnival marked by three time bell sound in city hall. There were many sounds from some various

of trumpet and percussion from far away. Gilles walk stamped his foot.

Every Gilles brought rattan basket full with orange fruit at least 25 kg in weight. A long the way they threw that fruit to the visitor. I joined too, just to be excited.

I think that an orange is a symbol something that have a price for Belgium people. Enthusiasm and lively carnival make niche impression and many story in my imagination.
