  • Throughout the entire track, I think that the band has an excellent flow and even though they come up with a pretty accessible sound, they retain their experimental sound

Shine On Sweet Jesus – Jesus Song No. 5 is a song by the Flaming Lips and the opening track to their fourth album, In A Priest Driven Ambulance.

Opening up with a distorted guitar part and a full sound of instruments in the background, the Flaming Lips do an excellent job of establishing a very whole sound early on with this song.

In addition, something to note about Coyne’s vocal

performance on this track is that it sounds far more like his tone on later albums than the hard rock delivery that was present throughout the Flaming Lips first three records.

Because of this, this track has the impression of sounding far more like an actual Flaming Lips song and I’d say he does a strong job with the melodies and overall performance on this track.

Throughout the entire track, I ...

      • think that the band has an excellent flow and even though they come up with a pretty accessible sound, they retain their experimental sound.

Something I should mention about the vocals of the track is that there is also a much lower-toned voice singing along with Coyne in some parts of the track.

Although some listeners may not enjoy this, I personally think that this voice goes nicely with the bass

pattern throughout the track and helps add some character to the overall sound.

Overall, Shine On Sweet Jesus – Jesus Song No.

5 is strong to say the absolute least and I look at it in an incredibly optimistic manner as the band does a very good job of opening up this record with a strong track which leaves me hopeful for the sound they’ll explore throughout the rest of this record.
