To Hell And Back is a song by Metallica which debuted at their third show at the Fillmore in San Francisco, California. The third unreleased track from Death Magnetic, To Hell And Back is somewhat of a ballad, particularly in comparison to Hate Train and Just A Bullet Away.

Despite this, the song still has plenty of heavy parts throughout and it undoubtedly has the Metallica sound.

      Opening up with

a clean guitar part, the song quickly moves into a distorted riff which has an undeniable rhythm and groove to it.

The clean guitar part comes back in for Hetfield to sing over with an excellent tone characterized by a melodic sound maintaining some edge to it.

Metallica follows their traditional power ballad structure on this track with light verses followed by heavy choruses and then a heavy bridge section.

      Though ...

      • predictable in terms of arrangement, the parts themselves are excellent and I’m glad Metallica did not disappoint on this track that fans have waited for years to hear after being exposed to parts of it from Mission Metallica.

Taking a major shift after about four minutes into the song, the band enters into an even heavier section which is filled with characteristic riffs and a chaotic solo from Hammett which

        works surprisingly well.

In terms of the three unreleased Death Magnetic songs (Thus far), To Hell and Back strikes me as the most polished of the three and probably has the most developed songwriting on it as well.

Though Just A Bullet Away stands a very good chance, Metallica have certainly outdone themselves with To Hell And Back.

I can only imagine what the fourth unreleased song will be like.
