I have for a long time been an amateur of legendary or epic figures, and especially those present in the Norse culture. For this very reason, I was unsure about watching this movie, being afraid that it might be more in the Hollywood style and not reflect the true nature of the legend that is Thor.

From the very beginning, the special effects were absolutely spectacular, and the creation of the frost-giants was exactly as it had been in my mind before.

The dramatic beginning meant I was in suspense from the start,

and the fantastic battle scene drew me in yet further, and the heroic nature of the Asgardian armies was truly wonderfully brought out.

The casting of Hemsworth as the main character, Thor, was, for me, an inspired move.

He looks every bit the Scandinavian hero, and there is no denying how impressive his chest is.

The romantic tension with Sif gives the movie a bit of spice, I found, not allowing it to descend to the soppy level of a typical love story.

The two main female characters were both looking fine, with ...

      • Natalie Portman fitting perfectly as a delicate flower with a strong character.

Neither, however, was as impressive as the CGI managed to make all the different gods, and the “realm eternal”, Asgard was created to a high level of accuracy.

The fight scenes in the movie are the ones that stand out the most, especially the last one, where the presumed death of Thor adds a bit of pathos, before the arrival of Mjolnir sparks an adrenaline rush and a crushing of the Destroyer.

The most positive aspect throughout was possibly the soundtrack.

It reflected the mood throughout, between love and heroic combat.

It was apparently based on a study of folk music in Scandinavian countries, and is highly effective, as well as providing some catchy tunes.

I would say this is not a movie to be watched with a great deal of scientific interest; it is definitely a Hollywood production, and is undoubtedly cheesy at times.

However, the funny moments, the fight scenes and the soundtrack mean that it cannot be missed as light viewing.

The heart-rending ending helps as well…I encourage everyone to watch it and to hope for a sequel!
