I decided to unwind last night and watched this movie on DVD. Scream 4 is another sequel to the 1996 hit Scream which raked more than 170 million in the box office.

The plot starts with an anniversary killings in the fictional place of Woodsboro. Just on the fifteenth year anniversary of the killings, the killer Ghostface starts killing two students. Then Sidney Prescott ( Neve Campbell ) came back to the town to promote her book. The story now centers in

three new characters Jill who was Sidney Prescott’s cousin ( played by Emma Roberts ), Olivia Morris ( Marielle Jaffe ) and Kirby Reed ( Hayden Panettiere ). The first one killed was Olivia who lived just across the house of Jill where Sidney was also staying at that time. Both Jill and Kirby saw it from the window. Then Sidney’s publicist was murdered in the parking garage. As everything happens, Gale Weathers-Riley ( played by Courtney Cox ) investigates the murders and sought the help of two horror movie enthusiast but was stabbed. She survived the attack. The story concluded revealing that it was Jill and one of the movie enthusiasts Charlie Walker who were behind the Ghostface murders.

Jill revealed to Sidney that it was her jealousy that motivated her to do this.

The movie had an impressive reveal for the ending and it was the only suspenseful part for me but I dislike the rationale why the antagonist did all the killings. While waiting to know ...

who was behind the Ghostface mask, I was yawning because the story was shallow and drearily dull. The writers of the film tried to stretch the plot to let the viewers feel that there is continuity and that it was realistic. However, I find it unappealing. They kept pounding the story line as if it was a malleable metal that when heated can really expand. Perhaps the good thing of the original Scream in 1996 was its ingenuity. It was a perfect scenario to
get scared and that explains why it earned 173 million in worldwide ticket sales. This makes the its budget of 15 million too microscopic and obviously made the movie one of the most successful horror suspense movies in the 90’s. But the producers want this commercial success to be the reason for the remake and reaching the 4th installment is quite a stretch just like its story. Wes Craven should cement the film to rest and let its legacy remain instead of pounding it to infinity because of commercial motivation.
