I really loved this movie. I found it to be very moving & inspiring. >Freedom Writers is based on a true story about inner city kids growing up in Long beach California. They are trying to survive Drive-by Shootings, abuse, Racial Tension & Violence, after the worst riots in 1992 centering around interracial gang warfare.

The story basically centers around the mid 90’s at Wilson High School, though there are glimpses into the kids lives outside the shool as well. Erin Gruwell ( Hilary Swank ) is a brand new Teacher. Her assignment is classroom 203, which is a mixture of Blacks, Latino’s, Asians & 1 white student, and they are gangsters.

Enter Erin Gruwell, and she’s white, naturally the class hates her, because she is white. Erin

has to learn how to deal with all the racial hate , and anger, not only herself, but the hate for each other, which won’t be an easy task. Erin strives to understand these kids, and their hate for everything.

Erin finds ways to reach these kids, and teach them about respect & racism. Erin listens to the kids. Erin tries to get the School to provide her class with books, but they refuse.

Erin picks up two part-time jobs to pay for books & trips etc. Meantime her marriage is falling apart. Her husband isn’t supportive of her.

( though I did feel sorry for him, she could have treated him better) Also he did nothing to further his career. They head for Divorce, but given the ...

      • situation, she doesn’t give up on her students. Erin gives her class “The Diary Of Anna Frank”, which brings all the students closer as a group.

She also had given them Journals to write in, whatever they wanted or emotions they felt. She had a closet in which they could place the Journals , if the students wanted her to read them, and everyday the students left the Journals in the closet. The students also raised money to bring Miep Gies to Wilson High, and to speak about the Holocaust, and how she had hid Anna Frank.

At one point Erin has to tell her students they will be in different classes next year, they did’nt take it well. Erin sits down and reads the Journals again, and

decides they should write a book…. I will leave it at this point.

She also proved they were teachable. I found this movie very moving.

When Erin spoke, you could see the subtle emotins on her students faces. The students respected her. A must see movie!! You will be glad you did.
