I was actually playing the Blokus game with some friends of the family when they suggested playing Cranium Whoonu. I have played a few of the Cranium games (Cranium itself, Cranium Cadoo), and they tend to be simple, fun games. Sometimes there doesn’t seem to be much point to them but they’re still fun to play, so I agreed to try the Whoonu game out.

It actually seems very similar to the Apples to Apples game. Everyone has a hand of cards, and you give the

two (or more) cards to the person whose turn it is. That person awards points based on which things he or she likes the most. The only difference from Apples to Apples is that everyone gets points, and that in Apples to Apples, you are trying to choose which thing the person will think fits best with a particular description.

We made up several variations on the game which made it funnier, especially when we played so that the point was to get the least amount ...

      • of points, and then of course you got a hand full of cards that listed things the person liked. It was fun.

One advantage to this game is that each round is actually very quick. It’s a good game to play if you have 20 minutes free but want to play an entire game. It’s also very tidy - there aren’t a lot of pieces, you don’t need paper, there are just the cards and the small tokens which show the points. The points might be

difficult for younger children who can’t do a lot of adding yet, or for people who have trouble reading tiny print - I kept forgetting which colour meant which amount in the first round, and the numbers are in raised print on the same colour token. So it’s not perfectly designed, but at least it doesn’t have as many pieces and materials as other Cranium games.

This is a fun getting to know you game as you have to guess what the other people will like.
