You may have heard of them: the Vocaloid sensation that’s swept the internet. Particularly Youtube videos. The Vocaloid is a character created for the sole purpose of entertainment. You utilize the downloadable software by recording little sound segments (syllables would probably be the best word to describe it). Usually, fans and the professionals alike prefer to use the Japanese language when compiling songs. Otherwise, it’s more often than not recorded in English. The software basically allows you to change

the tone and pitch of your voice to that of a mechanical voice with a slight echo effect. As if you’re speaking into one of those toy microphones. This allows you to create a “Vocaloid character’s” voice.

The software is easy enough to use. That is, if you can understand what you’re reading. Its natural format is in Japanese kanji, or if your computer cannot read the symbols, they appear as simple boxes with maybe a fragment of an English ...

      • word here and there. Difficult, if not impossible, for a user to access correctly unless using a video or “How-To” guide online. If one wishes to read it in their own native language, they would have to somehow located and download the Patch for it and correctly sync it to the Vocaloid folder…in the right place. This would take a bit of work, but if you’re tech savvy enough, it’s well worth it.

Once you get the hang of things,

it’s actually a fun little application. The software isn’t too large of a file so it doesn’t usually lag up your computer or take up much space. It’s not exactly easy to get used to but tinkering around and playing with the recordings is easy enough. You learn by doing, basically, unless you’re experienced with voice altering software. It’s also a fun activity thinking up or even drawing your own Vocaloid character to go with the new voice you’ve conjured up.
