Bangkok, Thailand
  • I did a lot of shopping here and was able to find some really good purchases, some of the best I saw in Bangkok, although the quality of course, is not the best
  • Despite a lot of people drinking, our experience was that it is quite a pretty safe place, and easy to get transportation to and from whatever point in Bangkok even in the wee hours of the morning
  • It’s a pretty popular restaurant known for its delicious Thai food
  • Every single thing we ate was delectable and I definitely highly recommend this restaurant

Khao San Road is Bangkok’s backpacker paradise. I was in Bangkok last March for vacation and was booked for a spa treatment at Rambuttri Road, which is just a block away so we decided to go to Khao San afterwards.

Khao San is a very vibrant road especially at night. There are bars and restaurants along the road, and tons of entertainment, things to see, and things to do. There are people offering massages, tattoos, hair extensions, snake pictures, etc. There are tons of things to drink and eat which includes different kinds of insects and other street food. There are tons of stuff to buy and haggle for, with really pretty and cheap items with styles for younger people, as the whole

street is filled with young backpackers and the like. The crowd is mostly made up of young foreigners/tourists. I did a lot of shopping here and was able to find some really good purchases, some of the best I saw in Bangkok, although the quality of course, is not the best. There are shops with unique items, while there are those with souvenir and other stuff that you can see all over Bangkok. Despite a lot of people drinking, our experience was that it is quite a pretty safe place, and easy to get transportation to and from whatever point in Bangkok even in the wee hours of the morning. Of course, if you’re into the girly bar scene or stuff like that,

      • this is not the place to go as the places here are mostly for drinking/chilling out.

In the afternoon, the street is more quiet and tired, and it can be quiet hot, but there are still many things to see and buy on the sides of the street.

I had dinner at restaurant in Khao San which is called Tom Yum Kung. It’s a pretty popular restaurant known for its delicious Thai food. It’s not actually on the side of the road, you have to enter a doorway and inside is a compound with a bar, a dessert place, and the restaurants. It’s really quite a classy and quiet place, which is different from the ambiance outside the road. The food is quite affordable, and top notch.

Every single thing we ate was delectable and I definitely highly recommend this restaurant. Some of the popular bars in Bangkok are also located nearby.

The street after Khao San Road is Rambuttri Road, which is another eclectic and artsy road with bars, massage places, guesthouses, etc. There are lots of nice places to drink and hangout as well.

All in all, Khao San Road, and its neighboring Rambuttri Road are must-sees, if you’re young and ready to shop and party until the wee hours of the morning. If you’re adventurous and looking for cheap accommodation, there are lots of guesthouses as well. At night, it’s a mix of lights, sounds and scents and one of the most enjoyable places I went to during my trip.
