As a huge fan of the television show and manga (Japanese comic book) of Naruto, I was incredibly excited when I heard that this video game, Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2, was coming out. I was also excited because not only does it follow the Naruto: Shippuden storyline up to the Pein/Pain arc, but it also contained several of my favorite Akatsuki characters–a feat which other video games following the Naruto saga failed to live up to.

I bought Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 for the Xbox 360. The opening credits and scenes were amazing visually, and I actually sat through them various times instead of skipping past them. The menu is simple, and has options to play online, play a story mode and free play/battle against a computer or friend. It also has options to

change the difficulty of the computer, whether or not you want subtitles and has options to change the voices of the characters (for example, it lets you decide whether you want to use the American [dub] voices, or the original Japanese voices). As a fan of Naruto, I know other fans dislike certain voices, and this was a great decision among the game producers’ part.

The game play is smooth. The game involves battles, searching for items, mini-quests, . It not only follows the original Naruto: Shippuden storyline from the start, but it also has sub-stories so the game wasn’t all storyline. In the game, you can form your own team. It also has ‘friendship levels’, where you can give the characters gifts, and receive letters from them. It wasn’t very useful in the game, but it was fun ...

      • and amusing to receive letters from the characters.

The battle scenes were nice. Boss battles were sometimes difficult. The cut scenes were visually stunning and relevant to the game. The boss battles had a unique feature where you push buttons and it goes to another cut scene. Also in battle, you get a support, sometimes. The support is very useful.

The game follows the original storyline closely. There are some differences, but that is because it probably would have not played out well in the game. Some characters, like Hidan (a cursing, loud-mouthed villain), were changed. Hidan, for example, did not swear, despite the game being rated T, and containing other swearing characters.

The game, though visually appealing, did not have many settings. Many of the fight scenes took place in one area, like a forest. That was disappointing, as I

wanted to see more of the story’s settings.

One thing I did not enjoy right away was the fact that to get items/weapons, one would have to search for the materials needed to build it. Later, though, I realized that this was actually kind of fun, and the weapons/items would never run out after finding the materials and making the item.

I didn’t like that there were only a few slots for the items.

That being said, because the game follows the Naruto storyline, it can get repetitive. Likewise, after playing through the game, one may not want to play it again. That’s why I gave it an 8 instead of a higher rating.

Overall, Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 receives a ‘8′ as it was fun to play, visually appealing, follows the original storyline, and has a variety of characters!
