On a recent weekend outing with a close friend, we decided to rent a Chevy Malibu. The car was beautiful–large, white, and plenty on room to spread out and be comfy. It had its pros, but the cons definitely outweighed them.

Mechanically speaking, the car was a wreck. Despite the fact that it was a 2011, it was having some problems. The transmission was horrid! When we were going 60 mph on I-25 (slightly uphill, but

nothing extraordinary), the transmission would pull. You could tell it was struggling to switch gears, like it couldn’t catch the gear. It was pretty bad on the interstate and highway, but it was even worse in the city. Going to stoplights was pretty uncomfortable. You could feel the car roughly shifting down both gears as it tried to keep itself running.

The car was a six speed, and luckily had a semi-manual mode where we ...

      • could control the shifting of gears. Even so, we could feel that the car sometimes didn’t catch the change properly.

Just a small flaw, the AM radio had a lack of clear reception. When we tuned into AM 750 (an Atlanta station), all we could hear was a high-pitched ringing. The other stations had the same noise, only in varying frequencies. So if you’re an AM fan… good luck.

Other parts of the car were lovely.

It was quiet on the road, had satellite radio, lots of storage, a really fast-acting AC, and a modern lighting system.

I don’t recommend purchasing this car at all. If all of the Malibu transmissions are this bad, the upkeep and cost of maintenance of the car would be ridiculous. You could buy a car of the same comfort level with a better built engine. The car is all the right ideas, but with an amateur engine.
