  • I think that with Climbing To New Lows, MGMT didn’t have quite the same energy level that they had with Oracular Spectacular, although some of this may be due to a better production quality on the latter album

Climbing To New Lows is the debut album released by MGMT. Though most fans associate MGMT with Oracular Spectacular, or Congratulations to a lesser extent, I still believe that Climbing To New Lows has some good songs on it and shouldn’t be written off as a poor debut effort. Though I will admit that some of the tracks on this album strike me to be a bit of filler material such as the opening and finishing tracks,

      • more electronic-based work, then I think that Climbing To New Lows may have quite a few tracks which you could enjoy. Though I won’t go as far to argue that this album is anywhere near as good as Oracular Spectacular or quite as good as Congratulations, I still believe that this is a solid debut release, and although I don’t believe it will be remembered with this band (That will certainly be Oracular Spectacular), some standout tracks
like Money To Burn or Honey Bunny should at least be given some attention by fans. Overall, Climbing To New Lows isn’t a wonderful album and it certainly would be a poor starting point for someone trying to get into MGMT due to the lack of very catchy songs like they had on later albums, but if you’re a fan of MGMT who would like to explore their earlier and more electronic work, it’s something to look into.
