  • I was impressed and surprised by Inspector Gadget's suggestion to Chief Quimby that the amusement park be evacuated, although I was honestly baffled by Chief Quimby's response in which he said there wouldn't be enough time
  • I thought that scene was cleverly implemented and it also easily lent itself to some natural humor, like Inspector Gadget coming up on the wrong boat by accident and disturbing the couple inside the boat before the angry man takes hold of him
  • It's a minor issue that I have with this episode though and can relatively easily overlook it
  • In my opinion, this is one of the series' stronger and more entertaining episodes

“Amusement Park” is an episode from the “Inspector Gadget” television series. While Inspector Gadget, Penny and Brain visit the new Metro City amusement park on opening day, Chief Quimby shows up and reveals that an intelligent report indicates M.A.D. has hidden a bomb somewhere in the new amusement park and will demand ransom. Inspector Gadget sets off on a search for the bomb, but only has thirty minutes to locate it before the explosive device is set to go off and tear the new amusement park to pieces. The thirty minute ticking clock deadline adds a sense of suspense and excitement to the episode, even though it’s pretty obvious from the start that Inspector Gadget, with the help of Penny and Brain, would succeed and the day would be saved. Still, the suspense and excitement were both there and contributed positively to the episode. Something else that contributed positively to the episode was Inspector Gadget acting somewhat competently in a few scenes. I was impressed and surprised by Inspector Gadget’s suggestion to Chief Quimby that the amusement park be evacuated, although I

was honestly baffled by Chief Quimby’s response in which he said there wouldn’t be enough time. Thirty minutes isn’t enough time to evacuate an amusement park? This time, it’s Chief Quimby, not Inspector Gadget, that appears incompetent, since he could have easily ordered police into the amusement park, got on a loudspeaker, announced that the amusement park needed to be evacuated, and then used the police to carry out an orderly evacuation. I was also amazed that, for once, Inspector Gadget correctly identified and pursued disguised M.A.D. agents!

The amusement park setting is put to good use in this episode and Inspector Gadget uses his gadgets in clever ways while in the park. One scene involves him chasing a M.A.D. agent to a tunnel of love ride where the agent hopes in one of the boats which proceeds to enter the structure. Inspector Gadget falls in the water, but uses his inflatable coat to come to the surface and allow him to float like a boat while he paddles with his hands. I thought that scene was cleverly implemented and it also easily ...

      • lent itself to some natural humor, like Inspector Gadget coming up on the wrong boat by accident and disturbing the couple inside the boat before the angry man takes hold of him. He also pulls off some impressive aerobatic tricks in this episode, which one might find surprising considering his often clumsy nature, such as during the scene that plays out in the sky when he’s pursuing a M.A.D. agent on top of a cable car. The episode was aided with some fairly decent animation, especially when Inspector Gadget is on a speedy rollercoaster car, which he later gets out of once it stalls and then uses his gadget skates to ride the rails. The episode has a fast pace to it, with Inspector Gadget chasing both legitimate M.A.D. agents and characters that he thinks, but aren’t, M.A.D. agents, from one attraction to another, with background music set to a speedy tempo that has underlying dire tones as the camera cuts to a shot of clock building which shows time running out. All around, the episode is pretty well executed and is,
thus, entertaining to sit down and watch.

“Amusement Park” is an episode that, like most episodes of the “Inspector Gadget” series, concludes with Inspector Gadget saving the day accidentally. The ending certainly works, but when the bomb explodes shortly after landing in a very large dunk tank, I have to say the explosion seemed relatively small, and certainly incapable of destroying the entire amusement park. Considering how much ransom money Dr. Claw was demanding, I expected the bomb to pack a great deal more of a punch. In a way, once one sees how small of a blast the bomb makes for the first time, the episode loses some of its dramatic tension upon repeat viewings. It’s a minor issue that I have with this episode though and can relatively easily overlook it. The episode effectively delivers when it comes to action and comedy and the amusement park setting brings about a fun and festive feeling at times during the episode, like when Inspector Gadget tries his hand at a booth game. In my opinion, this is one of the series’ stronger and more entertaining episodes.
