All Japanese All The Time (AJATT) is a website dedicated to inspiring, motivating, and educating language learners. It is unique in that it does not aim to teach a word of any language, but rather in teaching readers how to learn, and greatly empowering them in doing so. This website was my first experience with meta-learning (learning about learning) when I discovered it back in 2009. Though, as its name suggests, the site does tend to be a little Japan/Japanese-specific, the ideas apply not only to other languages but to other aspects of life entirely, due to its strong focus on material that would be classified as personal development. Its creator, a guy who calls himself Khatzumoto, learned Japanese to native fluency in 18 months at the age of 21 by following several principles: 1. Fun is

the most important thing. If it’s not fun, throw it out. 2. Pretend to BE Japanese. Do what Japanese people do to replicate their results in learning their native language.

Listen to and read the language in massive amounts. Create a simulated immersion environment around yourself.

As cheesy as this sounds, the website totally changed my life down to the most fundamental levels. I discovered it as a high-school senior who was just generally bored and frustrated with life. And now I’m a rich CEO of a Fortune 500 company thanks to it! …Totally kidding. Pokes at typical personal development testimonies aside, I’m truly serious in saying that reading this website has radically altered my world view. I initially stumbled upon it when looking for a way to re-learn Japanese (a language I have ...

      • spoken since childhood but gradually forgot due to neglect), but, as fate would have it, ended up using its principles to learn Mandarin Chinese, which I continue to do to this day.

The majority of the website is a series of extremely motivational articles, which talk about things too numerous to mention: from banishing English from your life and building a Japanese environment, to coping with the effects of that, to various advanced learning techniques, to Japanese media recommendations, it has everything you need and more to kick yourself into gear when it comes to learning another language. If you’re not learning Japanese or have no interest in doing so, just mentally replace the word “Japanese” with whatever your target language is and 90% of the site still applies. Khatzumoto’s writing is incredibly funny and an absolute joy to read

(which is good, because the site is HUUUUGE; one could easily spend several weeks reading all the articles.)

There’s also a “premium” section of the website that requires a monthly subscription called AJATT Plus, which I am a member of. The biggest draw is a decently-active forum, and many premium-only posts and products which more than make up for the cost.

Ultimately, nothing I say can sum up the greatness that is AJATT. The only thing I dislike about the site is waiting for new articles to come out; I do tend to compulsively check it many times daily, though it is usually only updated once every few days.

Bottom line, if you have any interest whatsoever in language-learning, education in general, autodidacticism, or personal development, check it out. Click the “Table of Contents” button at the top left to dive in!
