It’s only every so often that a video game really makes me think while giving me so little to go on.

Yume Nikki (Japanese for “Dream diary”) is a 2-D, retro freeware adventure game available for download for PC that’s famous for simplicity and interesting characters. It’s a simple game in retrospect: You play a girl name Madotsuki whom

is a shut-in. However, when she goes to sleep she enters the vast world of her, sometimes nightmarish, dreams. From Aztec symbolism, to a dinky, depressing little boiler room on the planet Mars, to even Hell itself, this game has so many vast maps and locations that I’m one-hundred percent sure that I’ve yet to see them all (and I’ve finished the game!).

a sucker for cheery games, Yume Nikki is NOT for you. The music, areas, creatures, and miscellanious things you can interact with are very sad on their own, add a little thought and assumption and you may find yourself bawling at your keyboard (if you’re the sensitive type, anyway). It can be a real mindfuck sometimes (especially the
end), but the level of exploration, freedom, and creativity this game offers is almost peerless. I honestly enjoyed Yume Nikki greatly, and still boot it up from time to time for fun. If you enjoy a good, casual game or need a break away from games like Call of Duty and Left for Dead 2, then I reccomend downloading Yume Nikki.
