“The Amazon” is an episode that’s from the “Inspector Gadget” television series. This is sort of a special episode as it features the man that installed the gadgets that Inspector Gadget now utilizes, Professor Von Slickstein. Dr. Claw kidnaps the scientist and hauls him off to the Amazon Jungle where he instructs the good-hearted man to construct an army of indestructible robots. Inspector Gadget’s mission is to rescue the professor before Dr. Claw can turn the robots on the world. The animators capture the colors and look of a dense jungle well, with the static background full of trees, vines and various kinds of foliage. The jungle looks convincingly real and the well-drawn backgrounds are accompanied with appropriate instrumental pieces that utilize drums among other instruments that further enhance the jungle atmosphere. The episode even comes complete with an Aztec temple, but other

than the room Dr. Claw uses as his office, there’s hardly any distinguishing characteristics that make the temple interesting to look at. Other things associated with jungles, including a tribe, animals and snakes that live in the jungle, among other things, are all present and enhance the flavor of the episode. This is the only episode of the series set in a jungle, and the exotic location is portrayed pretty well for the most part thanks to the handiwork of the animators and those responsible for the music.

The static, background drawings unfortunately look better than the animated scenes, unfortunately. The car chase in the beginning of the episode looks awkward at times because of the way the Gadgetmobile and the Clawmobile move, and it’s shame that the only time in the series where Inspector Gadget attempts to catch Dr. Claw didn’t receive better,

      • more fluid animation. Still, the car chase scene is handled well aside from the animation. At one point, Inspector Gadget attempts to use the Gadgetmobile’s Gadget Claw to latch onto the rear of the Clawmobile and stop it, and the angle the camera is positioned at as the claw is extending forward, where it looks like its coming right at the viewer, looks great. There’s also a definite sense of speed conveyed during the car chase scenes, so that too was handled well on the part of the animators. Inspector Gadget acts unusually competent during the chase scenes, going as far as to phone Chief Quimby during the chase and inform him of Dr. Claw’s destination so that the police can organize a blockade to try and force Dr. Claw to come to a stop, so that added to the excitement of the
car chase. Later in the episode though, Inspector Gadget’s oblivious nature returns in full force and he fails to recognize the Clawmobile when it pulls up next to him despite chasing that very same car earlier in the episode. That was kind of ridiculous and far-fetched, even for this television show.

While “The Amazon” is an episode that has its strengths, I do think it’s an episode that could have benefited from better, sharper and more fluid animation as well as some additional exposure of Professor Von Slickstein. We really don’t learn much about the man that was responsible for the bionic feats that transformed Inspector Gadget into the man he is in the series, and that’s both a shame and a missed opportunity considering he doesn’t appear again in the series. It’s still an entertaining episode though and far better than the series’ worst or weakest episodes.
