“Winter Olympics” is the first episode of the “Inspector Gadget” television series. It’s interesting to watch this episode in part due to the changes that were made after it was produced, so there are some unique aspects that appear in this episode but not in the other episodes in the series, like Inspector Gadget having a mustache and a brief computer-like processing sound that accompanies the activation of his gadgets. It also seems that this first episode of the series was done with a higher budget than most other episodes in the series, so the animation appears more fluid and well-done, especially in regards to the scenes featuring explosions ripping across Dr. Claw’s castle and the scenes where the robotic abominable snowman is destroying homes

in a village. For 1983, the animation is pretty visually appealing and even by today’s standards, portions of the episode hole up well.

The episode’s story bounces around a bit with Dr. Claw first aiming to plant a bomb during the opening ceremonies of the Winter Olympics and then later, he unleashes a mechanical monster on the village where the Winter Olympics are being hosted, all the while he’s attempting to eliminate Inspector Gadget too, so it’s a busy episode that keeps moving. Near the middle of the episode, attempts to eliminate Inspector Gadget, Penny and Brain are lined up right after one another, and the elimination attempts make very good use of the winter theme, such as when the three are ice skating, cuts are ...

      • made into the ice so that the frozen pond breaks apart and the three are carried off down the river toward a waterfall while another elimination attempt involves a ski lift accelerating wildly. These action elements are accompanied by moments of comedy as Inspector Gadget attempts to get his gadgets to function properly to deal with each “accident”. The voice acting in this episode also seems to be more genuinely convincing at times than in later episodes, like when Penny is screaming as the ski lift picks up a dangerous amount of speed, but that may have to do with the fact that her character had a different voice actress in this episode, and the voice actress may have simply been a better performer than
        the later one.

“Winter Olympics” is a fine episode to kick-off the “Inspector Gadget” television series. There are plenty of moments of comedy, especially involving the M.A.D. yodeler who seems positively bonkers with the way he walks and talks, plus there’s action spread out across the episode as Dr. Claw unleashes plots involving nature, man and machine in an effort to disrupt the Winter Olympics and take out Inspector Gadget. The sound effects, the moments of silence while the characters are talking and Brain working more closely with Inspector Gadget than usual are all things that give this episode a different feel from the other episodes that are a part of the series, but it’s still a fast-paced, funny and all around enjoyable episode to watch.
