“Your Home Sweet Home Is My Home” is an episode of “The Dick Van Dyke Show”. This episode consists mainly of a flashback which takes the viewers back to a time when Rob and Laura, with the help of neighbors Jerry and Millie, were searching for a new home to move into. Faithful viewers of the series will likely enjoy the story and the comedy, but might notice that there are a couple of inconsistencies that contradict some earlier episodes. For one thing, the giant rock in the basement that is shown to be in the house that Rob and Laura ultimately decide on buying isn’t in a previous episode, despite it being stated in this episode that the giant rock was never removed. Also, an earlier episode which also utilized the flashback format shows Laura ready to give

birth while living in a house that has a totally different layout in the kitchen. The kitchen should have looked like the one seen on the series regularly, as indicated by the dialogue and events in this episode. The continuity errors may or may not hamper a person’s enjoyment of this episode, but it does bother me a little that the writers so easily disregarded continuity as it makes the show feel a little less real.

Aside from the above issues, I enjoyed watching this episode because it was funny. The story itself is pretty ridiculous as no home builder is going to construct a home around a big rock which is a part of some fault line, meaning it couldn’t be completely demolished. I did enjoy seeing the characters react to the big rock, with Laura at one ...

      • point suggesting they all take a few steps back and perhaps then the rock won’t seem as big. The pushy and fast-talking realtor, who sees the rock as no “big” thing, was a pleasure to listen to and watch as he tried to spin the huge rock in the basement into a positive. Another memorable scene that plays out in this episode occurs when Rob is on the phone with the realtor and his wife and friends are all asking him questions about a house that’s available, and Rob attempts to relay the answers to the questions back in the order they came, but everyone ends up getting confused as to the number of bathrooms, types of cabinets and so on. The emotions expressed by the performers in this episode also seemed realistic and I imagine those viewers that
spent many weeks searching for the right house could relate to the frustrations Rob and Laura were feeling.

“Your Home Sweet Home Is My Home” is an episode from the series that has some problems when it comes to continuity and the story is less believable than many other episodes from the show, but it’s a fun and funny way to spend twenty-five minutes and also sheds some light on just how long these characters have been friends with each other as well as how they remained next door neighbors even after they all moved to a new area together. It’s sort of a “feel good” type story because it demonstrates how strong and real the friendship is between the two couples. I have some issues with the episode, but I still very much enjoy watching it when I run through the series.
