Howl’s Moving Castle is one of the most romantic, magical and amusing movies that Studio Ghibli has produced. I was in my grade school years when I first watched Howl’s Moving Castle and I never really understood what the whole story was about. Now, several years later (I’m already in my twenties), I suddenly had the urge to revisit my childhood once again and that was when I found my old CD copy for this movie.

Howl’s Moving Castle is a very touching tale about two protagonists, namely Howl and Sophie. Howl is a very powerful wizard who was rumored to have torn and eaten

the hearts of the beautiful girls he pursued. He is feared by many yet many women still pursue him. Sophie on the other hand is the daughter of a deceased hatter. A very simple hardworking girl who met Howl in an alley where she was being verbally harassed by two soldiers. Howl in turn was being followed by nasty henchmen and together they escape both dilemmas with the help of Howl’s magic. Later on in the afternoon, a mysterious woman appears in Sophie’s hat shop. That woman was the Witch of the Waste. She has pursued Howl for centuries. Upon entering the quaint hat shop,

      • she makes a few insults and proceeds to warning Sophie about being close to Howl, then she gives her a curse that turned Sophie into an old lady.

Sophie, feeling hopeless, decides to leave the shop. She went on a journey towards the outskirts of the town where powerful witches and wizards reign. Little did she know that this Journey would lead into a love story unlike any other.

Howl’s Moving Castle is a moving tale about love, friendship and family. It could be a bit heavy for very young audiences as they have no idea what those three elements really mean. Well, at least,

that’s what I thought back then (Or maybe I was just really dumb at that time, I dunno). Hayao Miyazaki really pulled it off! I really don’t know where that guy gets too much of those creativity… Anyhow, the movie is really amazing. It’s amazing because it had just the right amount of everything: love, action, humor, respect, forgiveness, family, and friendship. Of course there is also a bit of drama, but not that much. I recommend that you guys watch it! It’s perfect, even after you get to watch it 10 years later.
