  • The story is a bit weird, twisted and heavy, and plays with the minds of the viewers, but it is surprisingly interesting and was able to capture my attention
  • The ticket costs P1500 (USD 34.50) for the best seats in the house, and I would say that the price was worth it
  • It is one musical that I would remember and I would recommend people to watch it on its next run

I watched the play Next to Normal a few weeks ago at the RCBC Theatre. I was excited to watch it as it had racked up a lot of awards and good reviews. The RBCB Theatre was a good venue for the play as it was classy, intimate, and had good seating plan and acoustics.

Next to Normal is about a family with a mom who has a bipolar disorder and imagines that her

son is still alive. The father is having a hard time coping with this although he tries his best, and the daughter resents her mother for not paying attention to her. The dead son is an actual character in the play although at the start, you would not know that he is only in the imagination of the mother. Aside from these four main casts, the other two characters are Henry, the boyfriend ...

      • of the daughter, and the doctor.

The set of the musical is simple, but works well, and the lighting effects do a lot in changing the mood of the scene. The band which is in plain view (under the stairs) really did a good job, and the songs are good and memorable. The voices of the cast are all very good as well.
