Over the last few years, Nintendo has been losing its grip on the Video Games market. Although its handhelds are still a success, the Gamecube was considered nothing more than a ‘kiddies’ console’ and because of this, Nintendo began to lose its support, who preferred the more grown up Xbox and PS2.

One of the few critically acclaimed games to be released on the fledgling system was Super Smash Bros Melee.

Now I happen to have the original game and I felt that it was fun, but a bit limited unless you have friends to play against you, which I didn’t.

Is Super Smash Bros Melee any better? Well let’s find out readers’ ‘Let’s start of with the graphics (Seems like a nice and simple place to start): SSBM is very good in the visuals department, all the characters look great

and the locations are just visually stunning.

They don’t match Final Fantasy by a long shot but let’s give it a break there shall we? The older characters have been updated to fit in the 21st Century of Nintendo characters so they don’t look like twelve pixels now! The menu design is very well made and has a techno feel to it that is backed up by the warm but electronic sounding orchestra.

The music from Nintendo games have always been very good, no matter how bad the game itself has been and I’m proud and happy to say that Super Smash Bros.

Melee is no different! From classic Nintendo themes to newer tunes, you certainly won’t be short on great music and tunes to listen to.

I do wish though that they had made a jukebox section for the music ...

      • in this game as that would have made it so easy to listen to any song I wanted to! Ah well, we can’t have everything can we?

Now the next and possibly most important part of game reviewing: Game-play.

There are three modes of game-play: Adventure: You go through several stages to the end (Middle favorite) Classic: A series of side scrolling matches with a boss battle at the end (My favorite) All-Star Mode: You fight all the characters in the game with only one life available (Least favorite) With three modes of play, you’ll quickly find one that suits your playing style! There is also a trophy system where for each game-play mode you complete with a character, you gain a trophy about that character! You can also gain trophies about characters, items and locations from Nintendo’s gaming history! That’s

Nintendo’s way of contributing to educational history: Self-publicizing! Not that I’m complaining’ The high selection of characters is quite a nice feature as you don’t have to be stuck with two or three characters to play with.

Instead you have about two dozen which is absolutely brilliant! Another up for the game is its originality: I can’t think of many, if any games that involve all of a company’s characters in one game, fighting each other! Sega haven’t done it, Sony hasn’t and Microsoft hasn’t so Nintendo’s the only company that has done this so far!

Whether you’re a fan of the Gamecube or not, ‘Super Smash Bros.

Melee’ is a title that you definitely need to get your hands on.

Sure, it might nor be reversing the trend of people thinking of the Gamecube as a kids console but it’s a great game and one that everyone should try!
