I love passing by Panera. Not only do you smell the aromas of delicious, well-risen bread wafting from the oven, but you warm up to the steam of hot coffee and the aromas of sweet baked goods in the air. It’s a very inviting atmosphere – one that offers free wireless. The menu is simple but well-crafted. Panera offers a number of café, signature, and hot Panini sandwiches, in addition to a number of soups and salads. This is not your usual Subway restaurant. There is no American, pasteurized cheese in sight; in place, there’s Asiago, parmesan, gouda, cheddar, Monterey Jack, etc. The deli

meats are far superior and the chicken sandwiches they offer has not been “simmering” in liquid. They offer a variety of spread, different kinds of mayonnaise and mustards.

I normally get their $5 soup bowls but I decided to deviate from this routine to try one of their sandwiches. Under the signature sandwiches menu, I chose the Chicken Caesar, which is antibiotic-free chicken with asiago, lettuce, tomato, onion & Caesar dressing on three-cheese bread that they bake fresh every day.

I’ve never had a Chicken Caesar sandwich before so I have nothing to compare the quality of this sandwich. But I loved this sandwich!

      • The chicken was actual chopped chicken breast, not some processed, reconstituted chicken patty. The Caesar dressing was creamy, sweet and salty – the perfect topping to go with the fresh vegetables that were crispy and flavorful. And the asiago cheese! It was tangy and strong; just a little bit was just perfect with the creamy chicken Caesar salad. Best of all was the bread. We’re adults now and way past the “wonder” bread days. This bread was soft, yet it had texture and chew. The flavor was well-developed and not-at-all yeasty. You can bury your nose into that bread and you smell the
nuances of well-risen, nicely-baked bread. It also came with a crunchy pickle spear that had good texture contrasting bites from the softness of the bread and the creamyiness of the chicken.

This sandwich is definitely worth trying – delicious, flavorful, and well-inspired. It would have been a bit better if the bread had been toasted (representing croutons in the classic Caesar salad). The dressing was one of the best bottled Caesar salad dressing I’ve tasted. As a final note, Panera can also customize the sandwich to your liking. If you don’t like the veggies it comes with or want additional ones, they’re willing to do that without additional cost.
