  • This is definitely one of my favorite books
  • It falls right in my alley in the fantasy genre, and is a delicious but not overbearing length at 352 pages
  • One of the interesting things is that the cast is really very small – only about seven or so characters throughout and very little interaction otherwise, but it works
  • I would highly recommend this book to fantasy fans who would like to delve into something intelligent and breathtaking – and unique

This is definitely one of my favorite books. It falls right in my alley in the fantasy genre, and is a delicious but not overbearing length at 352 pages. And, unlike many of the fantasies out there, this one has depth. The characters are extremely real and relatable, and there are lots of themes dealing with morals/issues and real human feelings and causes and such, rather than the scripted, cliche` themes you find in many.

One of the interesting things is

that the cast is really very small – only about seven or so characters throughout and very little interaction otherwise, but it works. And perhaps this is one reason the present characters are so endearing – because the author spent all her time dedicated to them, focusing on their development.

Another interesting thing is that the book is actually quite slow, but somehow it still feels like an adventure. The author makes sure to develop everything, but she makes it so entertaining ...

      • along the way that you really don’t notice a lag of any kind.

This is the first book in a series of four. I was so attached to the characters and their story by the end of the book that I really could not wait to get my hands on the next one. The author really draws you in and gets you invested.

She also does a spectacular job building worlds and ideas and creating scenes. Her descriptions are vivid and breathtaking.

She’s done a good job here making her own concept of magic and all of the details that make it tick in her beloved world.

I would highly recommend this book to fantasy fans who would like to delve into something intelligent and breathtaking – and unique. It will also tug on your heartstrings quite a bit – certainly if you stick with the series. It is not often a book can break your heart – but these will, in a beautiful way.
