I and my friends had planned for a small vacation trip from Chennai to Yercaud in the 2nd week of Aug 2010.

The best promising option was by rail i.e. to take the Salem Express from Chennai and the 2nd best option was the Yercaud Express departing from Chennai railway station and would reach Salem early in the morning. But we took the Salem Express on Friday evening and reached Salem early in the morning. There were a lot of buses departing from the station to Yeracaud. We got into one of the buses. The tickets were Rs. 10 per head and it took us around half-an-hour to reach Yeracaud.

We reached Yercaud at 11:30. We had booked at local 3 three-star hotel (Lazza Hotel) over there and we had booked a luxury room costing Rs.750 (exclusive tax) per head and got

a nice room with a balcony overseeing the lake. The hotel was located right next to the lake.

The climate in Yercaud was warmer than predicted. It was around 32C and it got even worse during the day but the temperature dipped during the night. We went for a pedal boat ride on the lake on the first day. The pedal boat ride for half-an-hour cost us Rs.70 per head. The lake was a small and clean one. We had our lunch at the Malar hotel which was just 5 minutes walking distance from the lake. The veg lunch cost Rs.50 per plate and was a decent value for money. Rest of the day we were just hanging around and shit-chatting our accommodation centre and then we had dinner from our hotel. The staffs at the hotel and restaurant were ...

      • very polite. The hotel was mainly frequented by families and there were quite a few lake view cottages which looked great though was not sure of its view from inside.

We took a taxi/cab on the 2nd day and paid Rs.400 for a visit to all the tourist destinations in Yercaud. First we were taken to the Kiliyur falls. The cab driver cum escort had instructed us against going down the hill to the end of the waterfall as the hill was very steep and we could slip off anytime. But however, we didn’t bother him and started walking downwards, but after some distance we perfectly realized that he was right. Then our next stop was the Montfort school, after which we went over to the rose garden, pagoda point and ended our day at the cave temple. The cave temple

was situated at a nice height because of which we had to walk a few feet into the cave to reach the altar of the temple.

After our tour we came back to the hotel and had lunch buffet costing us Rs.50 per plate. The buffet was nothing but a standard South-Indian unlimited meals package. And after our meals we hit to our rooms for some rest and then packed our bags to get back to Salem. This time we went in a cab to the Salem railway station. The train was on time and by the time we reached the platform the train was already halting there.

So in that way we were back by next day morning to our homes. Overall, we had fine and personally had a superb short vacation and would recommend this place for a weekend trip.
