  • Although I ended up transferring because I was looking for a different college experience, this was a great school that is certainly one of the best within the SUNY system in New York State
  • The Classics and English professors in particular were truly on top of their game and made learning interesting and engaging
  • This is a huge research university, which means that although it is a state school it attracts a number of very elite professors who are looking to conduct their research, which works out well for students who are getting the benefit of their knowledge and experience
  • Although I am not much of a partier and therefore was not impressed with the cliché drunken football players and cheerleader-types, I was very happy with the guest speakers that I got to see, these included Conan O’Brien, some top scientists, and even the Dalai Lama

I went to the University of Buffalo for my freshman year of college. Although I ended up transferring because I was looking for a different college experience, this was a great school that is certainly one of the best within the SUNY system in New York State.

The school is very large, with close to 35,000 undergraduate students attending. The campus is very spread out and there are several buses that provide transportation from one area to another. The large number of students can be either good or bad, in my case, it made me feel invisible

and made it difficult to get any contact with professors who were already overloaded with appointments, questions, and concerns.

Although that was an aspect that I did not like, University at Buffalo does have some excellent professors who are very experienced and interested in their fields. The Classics and English professors in particular were truly on top of their game and made learning interesting and engaging. This is a huge research university, which means that although it is a state school it attracts a number of very elite professors who are looking to conduct their research, which works out well for students who are getting the benefit of their knowledge and experience.

The campus is split into North and South, with North housing the majority of disciplines while South is primarily a medical and scientific campus. North campus feels very much like a college campus, whether that is something you like or not. South campus is situated in a much more residential suburb of Buffalo, Amherst and is therefore better for shopping, nightlife, and access to the public transportation. It is also a much nicer campus, with greenery and a more peaceful setting.

UB is fairly average for a school of this size. There is a lot in terms of Greek life and social events. Although I am not much of a partier and therefore was not impressed with the cliché drunken football players and cheerleader-types, I was very happy with the guest speakers that I got to see, these included Conan O’Brien, some top scientists, and even the Dalai Lama. The Student Organization does a great job of raising money and listening to student needs and wants, always providing top entertainment and events for the student body.
UB was even featured on episodes of several MTV shows.

Dorms range from awful to pretty good. Some freshman dorms are atrocious, small, and uncomfortable, with beds that rise up six feet above the floor in order to fit a desk underneath. As you go on in your college career, however you have some more choice. My freshman year I was lucky enough to live on South Campus which is much more spacious and provides much better housing. Upper classmen have the option of living suites and apartments that are close to North Campus.

Overall, a good school with some downsides.
