  • Luckily in New York city it is never difficult to stumble upon a great one and partake in some delicious noodle goodness
  • However when you have tried one ramen place, you have pretty much tried them all, or at least in my experience
  • I was glad that I did not have to wait and also that I found this place because there are not all that many cheap eats in the Theater District that go beyond your standard high-end fast food selection

I am a big fan of ramen noodles, or really noodles in general, which means that I frequently enjoy a trip to a ramen house. Luckily in New York city it is never difficult to stumble upon a great one and partake in some delicious noodle goodness. However when you have tried one ramen place, you have pretty much tried them all, or at least in my experience. I am not a ramen expert, but it seems that most places have the same standard fare, hearty broth and perfectly cooked noodles. My inability to distinguish between the different ramen styles has been destroyed by my recent trip to Totto Ramen, a ramen place that truly stands out among the rest, making me believe that there IS indeed

a difference in how ramen can be prepared.

This is not a place to take a date or enjoy a leisurely dinner. Totto Ramen is a complete hole in the wall, with only about three or four tables squeezed closely together and several seats available at the counter. It is a tiny basement, which requires some skill to maneuver and apparently there is almost always a long and terrible wait outside of this place. Luckily for me, I came in at a time when no one was hungry for noodles, probably because it was still too early for dinner and the place had just opened (it was around 5). I was glad that I did not have to wait and also that I found this place because there ...

Having been seated immediately, I was ready to order almost just as soon. As I am a recently converted vegetarian, it is always very heartening to see vegetarian options in place where normally there would be none. Most ramen places include pork in all of their dishes, or at least flavor their broth with a meat of some sort. Not Totto Ramen! There were not one but two Vegetable broth options to choose from. Really they were the same except one was spicy and the other mild. I settled on the spicy option. The food came out within a few minutes and was absolutely stunning to behold. The

colors, presentation, and smells were all spectacular and I could not resist taking a picture before diving in.

It was delicious! There was just the right amount of spice that it added instead of taking away from the flavor. The selections of vegetables was hearty and even included avocado, which is something I had never seen in Ramen dishes. The noodles were firm and straight, slightly different from other ramen restaurants. Overall this was an absolutely delicious meal that, although seemingly small, worked to fill me up for the rest of the night. The price was pretty much exactly the same as any other ramen restaurant in the village, which was a nice surprise in this extremely overpriced area.

If you like some good noodles, eat here and enjoy!
