One of this year’s Oscar contenders, Blue Valentine tells the story of Cindy and Dean, a couple on the verge of a divorce after a short but beautiful courtship. Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams act their hearts out in this tearjerker and really bring to life these characters along with their faults and endearments. While I was impressed by the sheer craft of these two actors, the story is quite simple and straightforward. There are no explosions or special effects, just

a quiet, understated film about the disintegration of a marriage, the fading away of love, and the painful tearing of lives.

The director and the actor really accomplish what they set out to do, there is not a moment in this film that is not perfectly planned, visualized and realized. Every detail is as it should be. It is as if by making the story as simple as it is, the director could truly focus on his craft and create a beautiful,

      • if small illustration. Small is a good way to describe this film in some ways because it truly does feel like an enclosed space. I felt claustrophobic when trapped with Cindy and Dean, probably as claustrophobic as the couple themselves were feeling with each other.

Although this is certainly a sad movie, it is not the kind of dreadfully depressing, drawn out affair that drags down your day. Instead it is a contemplative look at a very real and very familiar moment

when a relationship dies. I commiserated with these people, I laughed and rejoiced when they first met and enjoyed the romantic first months of their relationship, I worried when they encountered their first troubles together, and I was upset when the cracks in their relationship began to show. The movie made me appreciate the love in my life and evaluate the various important aspects of a relationship.

Blue Valentine is not something that it is possible to rewatch many times, but it is a quality film with some stellar performances that are sure to garner both Gosling and Williams well-deserved acclaim.
