  • What's so bad about The Last Chapter, in my opinion, is that fans hoping for one last half hour of laughs with the characters that they've grown to love over the course of close to one hundred and sixty episodes end up with nothing but a majority of clips from previous episodes
  • About the only part of the episode I like is how the very final scene shows Rob and Laura lovingly kissing each other as I found that to be a sweet, almost poignant moment
  • I feel that the way the series ended was a major mistake and the cast, the crew and the audience definitely deserved better

“The Last Chapter” is the final episode of “The Dick Van Dyke Show”. “The Dick Van Dyke Show” is easily one of my favorite sitcoms of all time, but it’s series finale, oddly enough, happens to be my least favorite of the series and I can think of many sitcoms that, in general, lack the high average of quality episodes “The Dick Van Dyke Show” has to offer, yet have far better final episodes. What’s so bad about “The Last Chapter,” in my opinion, is that fans hoping for one last half hour of laughs with the characters that they’ve grown to love over the course of close to one hundred

and sixty episodes end up with nothing but a majority of clips from previous episodes. A majority of the episode is dedicated to events that transpired in previous episodes via flashbacks, leaving very little new material for the final episode.

The flashbacks contain funny scenes without question. Viewers return to the time Rob nervously proposed to Laura and Laura nervously accepts as well as the time Rob missed his own wedding, for example. The material was funny when the episodes first aired, and the material is still funny the second time around when showcased during this episode, but it’s no substitute for a real series finale. If this episode would’ve been aired ...

      • ahead of the series finale, in the form of a penultimate episode that looked back on the series, then I would’ve been fine with it, but I very much dislike that the final episode of this brilliant sitcom consists of mostly flashbacks to earlier episodes. About the only part of the episode I like is how the very final scene shows Rob and Laura lovingly kissing each other as I found that to be a sweet, almost poignant moment. Well, I should add that I also like how Rob trips over the ottoman in the living room, as he did many times in the series’ opening. The rest of the episode
        is just a total disappointment.

“The Last Chapter” was the last opportunity to feature the characters of “The Dick Van Dyke Show” in a funny story filled with funny jokes and great performances. Even if the writers would’ve chosen to do a regular episode, as if the series wasn’t ending, I would’ve preferred that over what they ultimately came up with. At least then, most of the cast would’ve been given an opportunity to shine one last time. I feel that the way the series ended was a major mistake and the cast, the crew and the audience definitely deserved better. I feel this episode isn’t deserving of a rating any higher than a “2″.
