My family has been dining at the View in Oakdale, New York since I was a small child, and it is a place I really look forward to going to on special occasions. Formerly known as the Riverview, the View is known for serving some of the best seafood available on Long Island year round. The decor and atmosphere at the View are really top notch, featuring a gorgeous view of the Great South Bay. The view really is gorgeous and the decor consists of modern, nautical themes. The building itself was actually part of the William K. Vanderbilt estate, a factor that ensures the beauty and exclusive feel of this restaurant. The View is known for serving incredibly fresh seafood year round, there menu actually changes with each season in order to offer dishes that highlight the fresh seafood available on Long Island for each season. Right now they are featuring their winter menu which offers selections such as fresh bass and sea scallops.

The View offers great prix fixe menus on holidays such as Mother’s Day as well as an excellent Sunday brunch buffet. The brunch buffet is expansive, offers a myriad of different selections and is offered from 11 AM - 3 PM for $29.95 per person. The Sunday brunch buffet offers two selections of roasts carved to order, an omelette station which offers omelets cooked to

order, unlimited shrimp in the rough, steamed snow crab legs, salads, fruit, smoked salmon and bagels and cream cheese. They also offer a selection of gourmet desserts with different kinds of cakes, pies and fresh fruit. Beverages are unlimited, including champagne, mimosas, soda and coffee and tea. The brunch menu has been recently updated to include sushi and raw bar items. The Sunday brunch is an incredible value, offering virtually every type of food someone could expect, want or desire for under thirty dollars per person. I also love the fact that everything is included for one flat rate, including drinks.

Therefore, there are no surprises when you receive your bill. My grandmother and I make it a point to go to the View for brunch at least one Sunday each month. We always have a magnificent time feasting on our favorites, steamed snow crab legs and shrimp and enjoy unlimited portions along with the great view of the Great South Bay. We leave stuffed and happy, without breaking the bank.

The View is a great place to go for Sunday brunch as well as special occasions. However, it is also a great place to go any night of the week in order to enjoy a delicious dinner. I go to the View particularly for their seafood. However, they do offer a full menu with other items such as steaks ...

      • and pastas as well. They have recently updates their menu in order to stay competitive with other up and coming Long Island restaurants of a similar caliber by including sushi not only on their brunch menu, but their winter menu as well.

The View has an excellent selection of appetizers, my absolute favorite being the seafood tower. The seafood tower appetizer offers all of the best seafood including lobster, littleneck clams, blue point oysters, lump crab and shrimp cocktail. This appetizer is on the expensive side at $42, but considering all that you are getting, the price is not unreasonable. If you are celebrating a special occasion or looking to impress on a date, the seafood tower appetizer will certainly do the trick. The lobster pasta is an excellent selection for an entree, made with hand made cavatelli pasta, fresh Maine lobster, pancetta, vidalia onions, spring peas, plum tomatoes and topped with sweet lobster cream. This dish is absolutely delicious, you can tell the cavatelli pasta is handmade and the Maine lobster tastes incredibly fresh. Many restaurants offer lobster ravioli and this is the View’s upgraded version of that dish. The price of this dish is incredibly reasonable at $25. The View also offers classic traditional dishes such as surf and turf, filet mignon and Maine lobster tail for $45. The filet mignon is incredibly tender, it literally melts in

your mouth and the Maine lobster tail is of course very fresh tasting.

The View’s Winter Menu also features a section titled “small plates”, which gives you the option of ordering small portions of several different items. I love this idea because it allows you to try several different dishes. Selections include yellowfin tuna tartare which is served with sesame ginger vinaigrette and an avocado puree for $11. They also offer jumbo lump crab cakes served with lemon aioli and mango avocado for $15. These crab cakes are some of the best I’ve had, flaky and crispy with plenty of chunks of fresh, sweet crab meat.

The View is a wonderful place to go for a quality dinner, either on a special occasion or just because. My family has been going there for Mothers Day every year for as long as I can remember and we have never been disappointed with the food or the service. The staff at the View seems to work very hard. They are always attentive to your needs and have a good grasp of the menu. The food is always top notch, delicious and fresh. The place is decorated beautifully and has recently been redone in a modern nautical theme which really fits with the theme of being a high end seafood destination. The view overlooking the Great South Bay provides the perfect atmosphere for enjoying a delicious meal.
