  • I can respect the songwriting which is intricate and interesting, but as an actual full album i can't help but get a bit bored at around the half-way mark
  • I know that die hard Queensryche fans will probably be scratching their heads and wondering why i don't think that this is a masterpiece, but let it be known that i do think one of their albums almost made it there
  • If you're a casual progressive metal listener, there are hundreds of albums that i would recommend before this one, but it's still worth listening to even as a curio for people that may have only recently discovered Queensryche and want to do into their history and discography

Firstly, i must admit that i never quite understood the massive amounts of praise that gets heaped on this band by anybody that listens to progressive music in general.

I’ve tried listening to this album dozens of times at different intervals over the last few years to see if i could finally ‘get it’, but no matter what i do i’m just not feeling it. I can

respect the songwriting which is intricate and interesting, but as an actual full album i can’t help but get a bit bored at around the half-way mark. In the first half there’s a couple of almost great songs, namely the first track Walk In the Shadows and also The Whisper and The Killing Words. but after that the tedium sets in and no matter how many little intricate pieces there are in the puzzle, i don’t think the second half is quite up to scratch with the rest.

I know that die hard Queensryche fans will probably be scratching their heads and wondering why i don’t think that this is a masterpiece, but let it be known that i do think one of their albums almost made it there. That album is Operation: Mindcrime ...

which would come a couple of years after this one and turn the progressive metal world on it’s own head.

It would be fair to say that this album, and the one that came before it The Warning, were both learning curves for a band that would grow to do bigger and better things. If you’re a casual progressive metal listener, there are hundreds of albums that

i would recommend before this one, but it’s still worth listening to even as a curio for people that may have only recently discovered Queensryche and want to do into their history and discography.

If you see it at a budget price somewhere it might be worth having in your collection, but personally i feel that the money i spent on it would have been spent better on something else

As far as the singer (Geoff Tate’s) voice, it does verge on over-singing cheesy power-metal type singing (think Ronnie James Dio from Dio and other bands) it isn’t for everybody. It makes the songs sound somewhat same-y at times. He devolved quite a bit on the groups later era albums this is him in his prime, at least.
