There are thousands of games in the Apple app store to choose from, and new ones are coming out each and every day. After exploring many of these options, I have discovered a gem that must be tried out by everyone with the option to do so. Whether you have an iPhone or an iPad, take advantage of the amazing game that has become a phenomenon, discover Fruit Ninja.

This simple game has a very direct premise. You are a ninja who must slice up endless fruit of different varieties. You can use one or two hands in order to

cut up as many fruits as possible. The only things to avoid are those pesky bombs that sometimes pop up amidst the plethora of attractively designed fruits. Should you slice a bomb the game will unfortunately be over and you will have to begin anew.

There are several game options; one is Classic version, which allows you three “lives” one of which will be lost every time you miss a flying fruit. The slicing of the bomb will, however, end your game. Then there is the Arcade version, a timed variation of the Classic, which allows you to miss fruit ...

      • without the fear of losing lives. The bombs in this version will not immediately end the game but will instead take off points. Finally, there is the Zen version which has neither bombs, nor time limit, nor lives, it simply allows you to gain points by chopping up as much fruit as is humanely possible.

This is a simple premise for a game, however I have found it to be oddly addicting. The design is extremely competent, making the fruit appealing enough to want to eat and fully realistic. Another amazing aspect of this game is the addition of random

“fruit facts” that will never have otherwise made it under your radar. For example, I have discovered that a watermelon is 92% water, that apple seeds are slightly poisonous but not enough to be harmful to humans in such small quantities, and that purple passion fruit are self pollinating. What a fun way to discover facts! I have often used these little nuggets of knowledge as ice breakers at dinner conversations and they are always a big hit.

Fun, colorful, informative game that is highly addictive and helps me wile away many a dull hour, Fruit Ninja is a definite winner.
