Music is always in the background wherever I’m at. I find it vital to a relaxed, yet fun atmosphere. That said, I like all kinds of music also. About the only stuff you’re not gonna hear around me is heavy rap, heavy metal, or heavy elevator music.

One of my favorite types of music to write or sketch to is women with brassy voices singing lyric driven tunes. I find this in the album Back To Black

by Amy Winehouse. It’s a combination of R&B, soul, and jazz. It’ sounds a lot the the divas from the 50s and 60s but with hip, dark lyrics.

What I like best about the lyrics is that they tell the story of Amy, who walks the wild side. Sometimes so much so that she can’t walk a straight line to save her life. I love the rhythm of the music and most importantly her dark,

      • sultry voice.

My favorite song is ‘Rehab’ but a close second is, ‘You Know I’m No Good.’ The lyrics speak to the naughty side of my personality and the musical cords have a soothing, thought-provoking influence on me which I enjoy. I am a big fan of the girl groups of the 50’s and find it fun that most the songs on this album have that classic feel. They create a vivid picture with their

words that goes well with the jazzy-soul back gound.

The one thing I do battle with, slightly, is the star’s image. It seems like everyone knows Amy has battled with drugs and alcohol. Occasionally I feel guilty for supporting the image that artists can get away with this deadly lifestyle. But then I question, why shouldn’t their gifts be enjoyed when they choose to allow the public a chance. Everyone has their own cross to bear.
