At one point I wondered why there aren’t more eccentric characters in one film. The answer is that they not occur. It seems that you can not cram a young English teacher with bizarre sexual inclinations, an old bearded playwright gigolo and a mechanic with a high voice who learned the dictionary by heart.

Louis Ives (played by Paul Dano) has lost his job at Princeton and decides to move to Manhattan to pursue his dream

of becoming a writer. He founds a room for rent in Henry Harrison’s (played by Kevin Kline) apartment.

Henry is a professor of literature with aspirations as a playwright. Our main character also found a job at a magazine, where he meets a girl who causes him to have confused feelings.

Young Louis is extremely shy, so he built a world that needs to replace reality. Louis has a passion for classical literature and sometimes imagines ...

      • living in the ’20s while a voice narrates his life in real time.

He dresses and acts dress and behave as in Fitzgerald’s novels. He also has a sexual oddity trying to become a transvestite.

He becomes friends with Henry because of their bizarre traits. The old man is intelligent, extravagant and inventive.

He likes to collect Christmas balls, to do gymnastics to symphonic music and woo rich women. It’s a kind of aristocratic escort for

a compromise that makes him keep his place in high society.

He has a mentor-apprentice relationship with Louis. Marie (played by Katie Holmes ) is a nice gal and she is somehow drawn to Louis’ shyness, but it’s hard to get attached to him when she discovers his defects.

There are two directors: Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini and they do a good job together, always. Now, if you feel the need to see something different then watch this movie.
