This fairy tale defies all tradition, somewhat a-la Shrek; the trend of taking a classic story and turning it upside down seems to be popular today. Here we have a beautiful princess, Elizabeth, engaged to a prince; the beginning is nothing unusual.

Then a dragon shows up, burns the castle, and kidnaps - no, not the princess; the prince.

Elizabeth is left with nothing, even all her clothes are destroyed.

However, she is not the type to whine and cry.

She puts on a paper bag instead of clothes and goes to save Prince Ronald.

When she finds the dragon, she smartly approaches him when he is full, so that he doesn’t eat her, and tricks him into ...

      • spending all his fire breath.

With the dragon no longer able to harm her, Elizabeth rescues the prince.

But Ronald turns out to be very ungrateful.

Elizabeth does not look pretty, with that paperbag on and her hair not done, and Ronald plainly tells her so, suggesting that she goes away and comes back when she looks like a

        true princess.

In response, Elizabeth breaks the engagement and leaves, for good.

The book is nicely illustrated by Michael Martchenko.

I found it refreshing to see a story that teaches young girls that pretty clothes aren’t everything, and neither is having a prince (boyfriend).

Only a prince worthy of your character is worth having, and good character matters much more than fancy dresses.
