Luxembourg has seen a record snowfall this year. Snowfall was quite heavy and early this year causing lots of upheaval and chaos on the road, disrupting commutes and even school. Well, I love it because I haven’t seen that much snow here since my oldest daughter was born. Not everything is awful about the snow though. Since it’s the school holiday for my kids and for both me and my husband, having snow makes the holidays more special and there are enough activities which one can do on the snow like sleighing and skating.

This afternoon, we decided to take the children to their first ice skating. There are two ice skating rinks in Luxembourg an outdoor rink in Beaufort and indoor one in Kockelscheuer. Coming from Luxembourg city, you have to go direction Bettembourg and from there, you will get the panel to go to the place. By bus, take number 18 from the Centre Aldringen where

all buses stop. It is not hard to miss the rink as the bus’ final stop is the skating rink marked as Kockelscheuer-Patinoire. There is a huge parking place and from there, it is jus a few meters away to the entrance of the rink.

The admissions fee is quite reasonable at € 2. If you are not an avid ice skater, the ice skates are available for rent at a reasonable fee of € 2 . The machine though for ticket payments does not accept €50 bills so it is best to take smaller denomination bills and even coins (you will need 2 € 2 coins to lock up your stuff in the changing room – refundable once you put back the key in). You also have to leave a valid ID to rent the skates. It is quite well organized from the moment you pay for the skates and admissions to the time you ...

      • get inside (skaters get a stamp on their hands for easy access in and out of the rink). Spectators do not pay any admission fee.

I find the rink large enough to accommodate a big number of skaters. There is also no age restriction as to those who could skate or not. Even small kids can use the rink provided that they have the skates (the sizes start at 22 European shoe chart). My children never skated before and even though it was hard for them, they managed to have some fun without breaking a leg or twisting their arm. Casques or helmets are available to rent at € 1 if you are anxious to protect yourself from head injuries while skating. There is a trumpet whistle every 2 hours by which time everyone has to get out of the rink as the iceman in his machine cleans up the rink to make it more icy and slidy.

        Those who

do not skate but need to be there to watch over their kids or minors can watch behind (cold but reasonable when you are bundled up in warm clothes) , or on bleachers or behind warmer rooms with tables and chairs just in front of the rink. And for those who get hungry, there is a small cafeteria just at the entrance serving hot and cold snacks and drinks.

Altogether, this is one place where you could bring the whole family for a few hours of fun on the skating rink, The place is open daily but the opening hours vary (between 12 to 4 and up to 10 or 11 in the evening). I would not hesitate to come back to this skating rink if I need to have a fun day on ice with the whole family. The prices are cheap, the rink of reasonable size and my kids learned to skate on ice in little time.
