I once had sore throat and I remembered our doctor recommending this Bactidol. Bactidol is an oral antiseptic which contains Hexetidine (100mg per 100ml) and alcohol (9%). Hexetidine is an active ingredient antibacterial and anti-fungal agent used in mouthwash and gargles. It is used to treat tonsillitis, pharyngitis, gingivitis, etc. It can also be used in oral surgeries.

Manufactured by Interphil Laboratories, Inc. and distributed by Johnson & Johnson (Philippines) Inc., Bactidol comes in a brown glass bottle, just like the usual bottles of cough syrups,

with white twistable cap (120ml). The solution in it is red violet with strong smell of like alcohol. You can use it when you have sore throat, just like what I did. Children of 12 years of age and adults must gargle and swish the required amount of solution which is half a mouthful leaving it for 30 seconds and then expel the liquid after. The taste? hmm… it’s strong. I actually could feel it pricking inside my mouth’s every part. But after swishing, I felt so cleansed!

      ...

      • Bactidol can also be used as a part of general oral hygiene. It helps maintain healthy gums. It also kills bacteria that forms decay acids in mouth making it a help in preventing tooth decay. Issues on bad breath will also be prevented by gargling Bactidol. Use it as mouth rinse in the morning or when needed. It sure would be a help. A 120 ml bottle of Bactidol could last for only six days when gargled twice daily. Not as cheap as other mouth gargles, but for me,
        it’s twice more effective.

In my case, just like what I’ve mentioned a while ago, I used this oral antiseptic for sore throat. It was really effective for me because I felt relieved after just a couple of days gargling Bactidol twice a day. Except of that pricking feeling when I gargle, can’t find other cons on this one! Try using this on minor sorethroats or other mouth problems. I have proven this myself as an effective oral antiseptic when it comes to that. Try swishing one now!

Is it available “over the counter” in the USA - or is a prescription required?

Yes, it is over the counter in the USA. You don’t need any prescription to get it.

As a matter of fact, Hexetidine is used in many mouthwash (as anti-bacterial and anti-fungal).

is it needed to gargle a water after using bactidol? Thanks a lot.

    Hi Willy,

If you are having some sore throat or halitosis it is best not to rinse mouth with water after using Bactidol. Because, the main ingredient of this oral antiseptic which is hexetidine, helps to fight some bacteria on your mouth which is the main cause for it to swell or even get infected.

Bactidol also helps to improve the appearance of mouth tissues and aid for general oral hygiene. Also, Bactidol should not be diluted in water.

You are required to swish and gargle the solution with full strength for up to 30 seconds. You need to do it twice a day. You should not swallow it. The medicine will work during this time duration and it doesn’t need to be there in the mouth for longer. You can wash your mouth later by gargling with normal water.

I understand this is the same ingredient used in the product I grew up with called Larigan. It tastes bad so it used to come in a bottle with a long spray nozzle so you could skip getting it on the front part of your tongue. But it works amazingly. And unlike Cefaclor that chews up your tissues, this does not seem to do that. My understanding is it stays in the tissues for up to 12 hours. Your body deposits virus into your throat so you can swallow it and have your stomach acids kill it. It is those live viruses that irritate your throat, so if they die right away they can’t cause more irritation so your body has a chance to heal. I have read comments about a double blind study with this chemical that showed improved healing for oral surgery. I would love to see a study to determine if this chemical reduced the spread of throat virus.

Hi, my doctor prescribed this to me. I was wondering do I have to mix the bactidol with water before i gargle?

    ReviewStream.com
    Galega says :

You don’t need to mix it with water. Take 15 ml of solution and gargle with it. If you are not comfortable, you can also mix it with water (which is not mandatory).

Where can I buy bactidol in charleston, usa?

    Jennifer Davis says :

Hi Ann, I had trouble finding it until a pharmacist at Rite Aide gave it to me. It comes in a small brown tube, but I had to specifically ask for it. I would suggest going to see a pharmacist specifically at Rite-Aide, Walgreens, or CVS. It is an over the counter medicine but I guess it is just kept behind the pharmacy counter. Hope this helps.

Hi Jennifer. Thanks for the info. I’ve been to rite aid, walgreens and cvs but haven’t specifically asked a pharmacist yet. How much was it? If you don’t mind. I kept calling other drugstores though and ask if they have. So far no luck. I’ll drop buy the stores soon, hope they have around here. Crossing my fingers. xxx
