If you have not read Ilion, the first part of this series that recreates the most authentic way science-fiction history of humanity, then perhaps you should grab it. Not the other, but you must read also Olympus, The better continuation of the starting novel. Novel “Olympus” is no less important than the first part.

And I do not understand outdone only by direct, yet entertaining style, but also the narrative complexity that surrounds the beginning. Simmons does not really waste time with descriptions of landscapes and other matters related to classic novels.

Instead, he goes straight to the action, in the purest American style. And as a passionate sf

reader (I think), I appreciated very much the dynamic style which starts the novel.

The beginning begins with the Trojan armies united against … yes, you guessed it, the order of Zeus and forefathers. To Zeus add a series of angry gods, well known to regular readers of Greek mythology.

And like there should have already read the first part of the series, because the novel has a lot of cute characters and the narrative threads (I counted about five) interwoven without understanding, without a bit of attention from the reader. The mount Olympus, the main character in the novel, lies somewhere on Mars.

      And the famous powers ...

      • of the gods have a source that they are not even aware of- they derive from the manipulation of quantum probabilities, through a liberal mixture of string theory with other more esoteric branches of physics. Another part of the geography is a planet Earth devastated, where the people try to understand their destiny.

Finally but not least, the third area of progress is the one planet Earth located in a galaxy where Homer’s epic tales … have already happened. I will not tell you this book because I would probably not reach all the allowed space (and would take more time than it took Dan Simmons).

        The long

description, the human poverty, “Olympus” abound in physical theories applied in the war Gods-humans, as in extreme situations, from which you’re trying to find out how it will go out and fail…util you read the following pages . From this point of view, the novel catch the reader attention and never let up until until the finish.

Dan Simmons is an expert at bringing the same table mythological characters and situations. Therefore references are numerous and often very tasty.

The history is altered subtly and continuously until it becomes unrecognizable. That is why the novel can be read on several levels - the alternate history, space opera or novel characterioloy.

And that’s why I invite you reading …
