It has been a while since I have been pleasantly surprised by a musician or a band, which is why I was so happy to discover Florence and the Machine. Much like so many good musicians over the years, Florence Welch hails from the UK and brings her “Machine” or alternating group of musicians, along with her, debuting with her heart-pounding album, “Lungs”. Her songs “Dog Days Are Over” and “Cosmic Love” have made their appearances

in TV shows, movie trailers, and frequent the radio waves. It is safe to say Florence has become an international sensation and rightly so!

In the vocals department few people can match this virtuoso. Like a seasoned pro, she changes from deep throaty growls to soft melodic pitches in seconds flat. Her range is unbelievable, both in sound and style. Within the length of one song she can tap into a wealth of emotions and employ multiple musical genres.

      • To compare her to a single performer would do her a great disservice, she is at once a Joss Stone, a Dolores O’Riordan, and even a little bit of an Ella Fitzgerald.

Stylistically, Florence is also a maverick. Employing an interesting mix of quirky charm and a dark gothic lyricism she creates such eye-popping ballads as “Girl With One Eye” and “Bird Song”, which are both at once catchy and slightly disturbing. Then there is the powerful

and dramatic “Cosmic Love” which whisks its listener on an exhilarating ride through the stratosphere, the achy yet subtle “Hardest of Hearts” and the surreal, lovely “Blinding”.

The album is comprised of twenty songs, which come in at about an hour of playback time, giving ample opportunity to get lost in this unbelievable gem. Florence is an incredible musician, a talented storyteller, and a top-notch performer. For fans of good music and exceptional poetry, she is simply a must.
