Sarah Lawrence is not an ordinary place. Their motto reads “You’re different, so are we” and that is not an exaggeration. This is a place where students get to interview their teachers, where grades are not a concern because they simply do not exist, and exams are replaced with lengthy papers, and the course selection is something out of a geeky student’s dream. Class topics range from Spirit Possession to Role Playing Games in Physics, so there is literally something for just about everyone.

For the student that simply could not get enough homework or contact with their teachers, this is the ideal place. Although one is only allowed

to enroll in three courses per semester, the coursework is not as simple as it may look. For one thing, you are required to meet with each of your professors bi-weekly in a conference where you are encouraged to explore your interests in the area of study and create your own sub-class. Working one-on-one, you then create a reading list, a variety of questions to answer, and culminate with a heavily researched end of term paper. Furthermore, the courses themselves are rather challenging and require students to complete nightly reading assignments ranging in length of anywhere from 100-300 pages. In addition, as there are no exams, papers are ...

      • an almost weekly occurrence.

This is an incredibly nurturing environment for an inquisitive mind. Professors are demanding, but are always available and work with you every step of the way in helping you understand and question everything that you come across. Each professor that I encountered was incredibly knowledgeable in many fields of study, reaching far beyond their own.

The campus is rather cramped yet has a lot of charm. The architecture is eclectic, ranging from large modern dorms, which can sometimes seem like a blight on the otherwise quaint setting, to adorable cottages which call to mind the English countryside. Living situations are difficult to predict as

they can also range from large and beautiful to cramped and unpleasant.

As a school that is still recovering from its same-sexed past, Sarah Lawrence is 70% female, which can certainly create some issues for the social scene of an institution. There is much frustration and unhappiness in this department. Yet, in other ways Sarah Lawrence offers much in the way of creative and interesting entertainment and events for its student body. If there is a shortage of relevant activity, I always found it in New York City, which is a short train ride away.

Overall, this is an exceptional school with only a few relatively minor shortcomings.
