I used a Punto diesel to teach people to drive (I am a qualified driving instructor). The diesel had a manual gearbox and I also used an automatic version fitted with a petrol engine. The diesel car had a 1300cc engine with a turbo.

This was really good - not only did it return a good 50+ to the gallon, but was also quiet and very nippy. On the down side being a small turbo charged engine, there is quite a \’lag\’ on accelerating.

On starting the engine, the glow plug indicator on the dash board only illuminated for a second before you could fire up the engine. It was only on the coldest mornings that it stayed on for about two seconds - the engine always starting on the first try.

One of the first things you notice on driving the Punto is the power steering - it has two settings. For when driving in town or parking for example, a ‘city’ buttom is used to ...

      • lighten the steering.

If you forget to turn this function off (back to normal power steering) it does it automatically when you reach 40mph. The manual car has a five speed gearbox, and I must say the automatic is the smoothest auto I have ever driven.

You just can\’t feel it change, and it has a function where you can select the gears yourself via a sequential function on the gearstick. The car has a practical interiour, with easy to read instruments and plenty

        of storage.

A note for any other instructors considering buying one - you CAN’T see the speedo from the passenger side. Although you CAN see the rev counter.

The Punto is quite a roomy car, with a decent sized boot, and for a cheap utility vehicle is pretty well made. Equipment levels while not wonderful are all you would expect at this level, with a decent stereo.

They also seem to hold their value on the second market. Would I recommend you buy one - ‘yes’ without hesitation.
