I’ve always loved dining at the various branches of ChowKing Chinese Fast Food Restaurant in Metro Manila. However, of late, certain circumstances pertaining specifically to their Munoz Branch in Quezon City has been making my dining experiences with the fast food chain less than appealing.

First instance, being particularly fond of their Lumpiang Shanghai (spring rolls) with garlic rice combo meal, I decided to order it last week at the Munoz Branch. Imagine my surprise when I was served with plain rice. When I inquired with the saleslady, she told me that the meal no longer comes with garlic rice but just plain rice. A takeout of a Lauriat meal for my Dad and Chicharap Prawn Crackers

had no sauces and no prawn crackers. Because it was a long walk to the branch, I decided not to go back for the missing items even if they were paid for. Two days later, I dined at the nearby Waltermart branch and I ordered the Lumpiang Shanghai and garlic rice combo. Lo and behold, they served the meal with garlic rice. When I told the branch manager about my experiences with Munoz, he frowned and said that all branches are supposed to serve that particular combo meal with garlic rice. He even suggested that I complain with the Munoz branch manager. I chose not to because of the hassle involved.

Now last Monday, my father decided ...

      • to call for delivery from ChowKing. When the delivery came (I learned it was the Munoz branch that processed the order), my father was incensed when he saw that there were no sauces and other condiments. Rather than call to complain, he decided to make do with the sauces we had at home. The last straw came yesterday though. Being fond of their Orange Chicken and their Chicharap Prawn Crackers, I decided to call for delivery. Although I specifically requested Customer Service to have my order processed at the Waltermart Branch, they forwarded it to Munoz Branch. When we opened the delivery, again, there were no sauces AND the Chicharap was nowhere to be found. Infuriated,
I decided to call up the Munoz Branch and complain. Have to admit I gave them a mouthful. The manager was profuse in her apologies and had the missing condiments and prawn crackers delivered.

Needless to say, given my experiences with the Munoz ChowKing branch, my liking for the food chain has soured somewhat. If anyone wants to dine at any ChowKing Branch — and not just the Munoz branch — better ask first if you’ll be getting the meal that you ordered for. Secondly, always demand your sauces and other condiments. If they have to deliver them right at your doorstep, demand that they do so. You paid for it. It’s only right that you get your money’s worth.
