When Gary Pallister signed for Manchester United from Middlesborough by Sir Alex Ferguson, the whole country had high hopes for this young central defender. Unfortunately the Manchester United side was still being rebuilt so whilst he had potential, he was being asked to slot in and make an immediate impact at the back and this started to look very unlikely in the early days of his Old Trafford career.

As with most players at the club

around this time though, the luck started to change when Manchester United won the FA Cup in 1990. The team started to gel better and from here on in won a trophy each season which led them towards the league title for the first time in 25 years.

Gary Pallister was an integral part of the side that Sir Alex had built and his partnership with Brice at the back is one that is still remembered ...

      • around Old Trafford to this day. Bruce was the smaller one, who put in the tackles, Pallister was just as capable of doing this but he was taller and quick and would sweep up behind Bruce if he was to ever miss a ball.

It was a great combination and one that seemed to be the backbone of any United success. Whilst Pallister had a slow start to his career things only seemed to get better

during his time at Old Trafford and it was only age and injuries that stopped him playing for the side late into his 30’s and this saw his transfer back to Middlesborough.

He was always well liked and whilst he never went on to get involved in management he is often welcomed back to Old Trafford as a t.v pundit. Far from flash as a Manchester United player, but one that the team and the fans will always remember.
