When Mark Bosnich first played in England he was on the books of Manchester United, but after failing to get a work permit for the player he went back to Australia only to end up at Aston Vila. During his time here he almost helped Villa win the league, but they were trumped by Manchester United but I remember thinking that this man was

the best goalkeeper in the league apart from Peter Schmeichel.

7 years later and Schmeichel was leaving Manchester United and they needed a replacement. It was often reported that Sir Alex Ferguson wanted someone else, but Mark Bosnich was a on a free transfer after his contract at Aston Villa had expired and this appealed to the clubs owner Martin Edwards.

I have to admit that I was excited by this move. I just hoped that he would step up to the mark and barring a few great saves and the odd great performance, he never really achieved what he should have done at old Trafford. There were reports that he arrived over weight and the fact that he was often injured suggested this might have been true.

just never looked convincing in goal. He didn’t have the same presence as Schmeichel and there was an uncertainty starting to spread within the back four. Bosnich was also very friendly with Dwight Yorke and further reports that the two were engaging in activity off the football pitch was frowned upon seemed to be taking his oeye of the ball.

      This was a great goalkeeper

but he didn’t really last much longer than a season at Manchester United. It was as though signing for the club was his version of making it and from there the effort to reach the top dipped.

He did very little else with his career after leaving Manchester United and it was a shame that such a talented goalkeeper ended up achieving so little in the game.
