Sean Connery’s James Bond takes a vacation from his usual European hot stops and turns native in this movie set in Japan. It doesn’t have the elements that made movies like “Goldfinger” and “Thunderball” great, but it isn’t a bad entry into the film series.

I’m a fan of James Bond, and I’ve been in love with the books and movies since I first saw them as a kid. However, while this movie was fun and had all the necessary

elements to be a great spy film, it missed the mark in a few places, but first the good things:

The action was satisfactory, and the opening scene where Bond is supposedly killed was top notch. This film was a rebirth for the character. The action was good and the story was well paced, and as always there were plenty of beautiful women and great commentary from the best Bond of them all. Also, this movie had perhaps the best ...

      • bad guy, evil lair of them all, and the flying mini helicopter resonates with fan boys to this day. This movie also contains one of the most creative and tense assassination attempts in any of the films.

However, one of the man point plots of this film involves Bond integrating into Japanese society. He gets a new hair cut, some new teeth a new set of eyebrows. In affect, Bond is supposed to not just be living in the new

land, but becoming one of its inhabitants. This simply just doesn’t work well, and the funny add on to James’ name and the physical appearance is more of an insult to Japanese culture than it was probably intended to be.

In the end, this was a good film, but it does require turning a blind eye and understanding of how society operated at the time of the release. Overall, it’s a good film, but not one of the best of the series.
