  • Audley was the favourite but Sprott really came out and attacked Audley
  • No one knew why, it was even denied by his corner during the fight that he had a problem, but as Sprott piled on the pressure and Asudley failed to offer anything, it was clear that there was a problem here

Michael Sprott vs Audley Harrison. I have to admit that I have tried supporting Audley for many years, despite his doubters, but as a fighter he has always frustrated me. An awful amount of talk and yet very little in his fights.

Having literally walked through Prize Fighter he was pitched against Michael Sprott for the vacant European Heavyweight Title. It seemed a nice match up as Sprott was forced to miss Prizefighter due to a family death.

Sprott, bit of a journeyman really, but he was one of a number of fighters who have threatened to

end Audleys career when he knocked him out several years ago.

Audley was the favourite but Sprott really came out and attacked Audley. It was fair to say that he was under siege and this seemed to be the pattern as the fight progressed through the rounds.

Audley was only throwing weak right hands for much of the fight, it was as though his left was just there for the sake of it. No one knew why, it was even denied by his corner during the fight that he had a problem, but as Sprott piled on ...

      • the pressure and Asudley failed to offer anything, it was clear that there was a problem here.

Sprott managed to wobble Audley on several occasions but just couldn’t get him out of there. The crowd was really enjoying this as you sense many had got their tickets just to see then end of Audleys career.

The 12th round was soon upon us and with Sprott a country mile ahead on points, Audley needed a knock out and with seconds to go he got it. A split second lack of concentration from Sprott, a final gamble from Audley

to throw his unused right hand as hard as he could and the fight was over.

Sprott had grabbed defeat from the jaws of victory and Audley Harrison saved his boxing career with only second remaining.

Part of me was thrilled for Audley, but part of me also felt that this was just another extension to the final chapter that may also be Audleys unfulfilled career. Great climax to a fight that. It all felt a little pantomime really with the man they all wanted to lose suddenly respected for the way he had forced a win.
