This 2009 theatrical release reinvents the story told in Disney’s Escape to Witch Mountain that captivated a younger generation back in 1975. This is the 5th version of the movie which has a science fiction theme surrounding children and a mysterious mountain. There are some updated elements to this version of the film, most of which work enough to keep the movie both up to date and still somewhat true to the original.

of RV traveling Jason O’Day, we have crazy cabbie Jack Bruno (Dwayne Johnson) hooking up with the siblings once they are reunited. The kids, Sara and Seth, are played by AnnaSophia Robb and Alexander Ludwig. They do an okay job, but I really prefer the original child characters in many ways.

For me, though, the Bruno character just didn’t work. He was too trendy in terms of being what is thought of as ...

      • offbeat, and his gangster past didn’t appeal to me.

What is fun about the remake is that the stars of the original movie, Kim Richards and Ike Eisenmann, have cameos in this movie. Even better, they are in the same scene and they get to interact. Their names are very close to the Tia and Tony ones from the film, too. Richards is Tina, and Eisenmann is Antony. Now that is cool

stuff, especially because their cameos are more than just two seconds. Both really had nice bits, and I appreciated that a lot.

Also in the movie is Carla Gugino, Tom Everett Scott, and wacky producer, Garry Marshall who is a hoot to watch.

I did enjoy the modern spin that was put on the story, utilizing a combination of technology and society’s fascination with UFOs and such. It’s definitely worth watching at least one time.
