  • I learned this practice from my accountant friend, who was the first to advocate that we use a prepaid credit card anytime we make a subscription online
  • But for the security it offers, this is I believe a small amount to pay
  • However, you must make sure that you spend all the money on the card within I think less than four months, or else another fee kicks in
  • I recommend that you try this card, if you want to protect your regular credit card

Vanilla MasterCard Gift Card is a prepaid credit card that works just like any credit card, except that it’s backed up by hard cash. To get this, I went to the local branch of Money Mart in our neighborhood, a financial institution that offers short-term loans such as payday loans and instant check cashing. But I’ve seen this card sold as well at 7-Eleven stores, so help yourself.

Why use a prepaid credit card like Fastcard’s Vanilla MasterCard? Well for one, it’s far more secure to use this card online when making purchases. I’ll be the first to tell you that this a good practice online. I’m one of those extremely careful persons you

just wouldn’t catch making a credit card purchase online with any regular credit card.

Because what happens when you unsuspectingly end up with a fraudulent purchase? Before you know it, the fraudster would already have billed your regular credit card not only one, but twice or thrice! With a prepaid credit card like Vanilla, it’s impossible for a company to bill you repeatedly, unless you approved the transaction by manually entering the card number, expiry date, and the card’s three-digit code again.

I learned this practice from my accountant friend, who was the first to advocate that we use a prepaid credit card anytime we make a subscription online. And I tell you, this is the way ...

      • to go!

I learned this the hard way, though. Two years ago, I hooked up with this purportedly legit home business company on the Web, which resulted in my regular credit card getting billed four times when I only made one transaction. As you can imagine, this only made me wary about entering my credit card information online.

One limitation of a prepaid credit card is it charges a one-time $4.95 activation fee. But for the security it offers, this is I believe a small amount to pay. I usually buy increments of $50, then destroy the card when I’ve spent the whole amount.

The Vanilla MasterCard is so easy to use, once it gets

activated at the point of purchase. You can use it right away, although the instruction on the back of the package says you must wait for 24 hours.

However, you must make sure that you spend all the money on the card within I think less than four months, or else another fee kicks in.

And you know what? You can check your balance at any given time, by going to the Vanilla MasterCard website. I recommend that you try this card, if you want to protect your regular credit card. Take it from me, who has learned it the hard way!

    Richie Mogwai replies :

In answer to your question, the purchase was rejected because most gift cards like this keep a balance equivalent to about 15 percent of the total value of the card. The best thing to do is call the provider`s 1800 number and ask them to explain. These providers do not say this explicitly on the card or the packaging, so it was a big surprise when I experienced the same thing.

I have a gift Master card with a balance of 9 dollars and 37 cents remaining. I made a purchase of 8 dollars and 37 cents but it was not accepted . Why?

As you might have read in the Terms and Conditions, you can’t expend all amount. There is a minimum requirement of balance that needs to be there. And, currently it is 15 %. You couldn’t buy with 9.37 Cents because of this 15 % needs to be there in your account. subtracting 15 %, the amount is less that $ 8.37, hence the problem.

Keep a margin of 15 % next time, and then you will easily able to buy the stuff you want.
