“The Ghost of Maidens Peak” is an episode of the “Pokemon” television series. This episode has a mysterious and eerie aire to it that I like. It almost feels like a Halloween episode as it features a ghost Pokemon and part of the episode plays out overnight, with a haunting wind that strikes an area where a shrine is built. The image of a young woman appears several times in this episode, a young woman that supposedly turned to stone many centuries ago as she waited for her lover to return from sea, which he never did, and she supposedly never left the foot of a cliff as she waited and waited for his return, her body so still that she became a statue, a statue that can be seen in this episode.

      It’s a

sad story that grows mysterious as the ghost image of the young woman begins appearing and even draining the life energy out of the young men that see her. This is part of the reason this episode feels almost like a Halloween episode. The mysterious and eerie tone of the episode is magnified thanks to the use of some dark blue, brown and black colors during the night scenes that are quite effective and the choice of background music, which invokes a sense of unworldly powers being at work. The animation and music just do a splendid job of bringing the legend of the maiden alive while bringing alive the feeling that something unusual is happening. I do feel though the story somewhat falters a bit when it comes to explaining why the ghost ...

      • Pokemon attacked Ash and company as well as Team Rocket. While the episode does explain that the ghost Pokemon has a desire to keep the legend alive and is in fact in contact spiritually with the young woman that died many centuries ago and still awaits the return of her lover, which in itself doesn’t make any sense since she and her lover should have been reunited in the afterlife, but that’s another plot hole this episode suffers from, it’s never explained why the ghost Pokemon literally attempts to kill James and Brock by attempting to lure them off a cliff by appearing as the beautiful maiden. Is it simply acting out of malice? I don’t know and apparently the writers either didn’t have time to develop the story further or they simply didn’t
bother to try and explain it. Either way, during the last ten minutes of the episode, the story really comes unraveled and ends up not making much sense, which is a shame considering how intriguing the story was up to that point.

This episode gets a lot of things right, including the mood, animation and music. There’s an exciting battle scene between Ash and company, Team Rocket and the ghost Pokemon that incorporates both action and comedy and is fun to watch. The story is quite entertaining and intriguing, up until the end of the episode, where it leaves the audience with more questions than answers due to some sizable plot holes. This does bring down my overall enjoyment of the episode, but I still like it, and I still like it enough to rate it a “7″.
