I just put my hands on a Samsung T559 Comeback phone, it is a rather uniquely designed messaging phone. When you flip the screen up, it reveals a full QWERTY keyboard and a large internal display as well as a second set of controls around the D-Pad. On the outside of the device there are a standard of 12 keys, alphanumeric keypad and a D-pad. The outside LED display is not very impressive, it kind of lacks the AMOLED display that I am used to when I test a phone from Samsung. On the left side of the phone we have the volume control and a specific Samsung connector port for headsets, USB and power. On the right side you can see the hinge and two soft keys that are normally used when the device is opened up.

On the back of the phone you will see a two mega pixels camera, and a speaker grill. The keys on the external keypad have a very nice feeling. The main menu shows a subset of commands. Some functions like the e-mail can’t be accessed unless you open u p the device. Opening up the device you have access to full range of features on the phone.

In terms of physical design of the keyboard, it is a little odd but it seems to work pretty well, you have got 4 rows,

the keys are lined up, you have some really useful shortcut buttons like “www” and “. com” and stuff like that. The inside D-Pad has a nice feel to it, you will also see a camera button and a messaging button that can be set to what messaging function you wish. I don’t really like the two soft keys because they don’t line up with the on screen labels that they represent. The feeling of the inside keyboard is quite good, it is like a Sidekick but it lacks the user interface but it has that Sidekick feel to it.

The home screen of the device shows a number of shortcuts like the browser. To access the main menu you have to push the left soft key, which is a little bit annoying because it is not very intuitive, for bringing up the main menu which is something that I am sure that every user will be accessing a lot. You will see a carousel of icons for accessing menus, I have to say that the menus look very good. It is very straight forward, nothing too complicated. Mobile versions of different web sites work pretty well, no problems appeared in this area.

It was weird for me not to be able to control the zoom with the usual volume adjustment “button”. On this model when surfing the web you use ...

      • the volume adjustment button to go up an and down on a page. Again the bookmark was weird for me, you have to keep the menu soft key pressed to be able to bookmark a site that you would like to view later on. The browser is a little unusual but workable enough. Zooming is an issue on the Samsung T559 Comeback because you have to resize the web page that you are viewing at that moment and then zoom out with the D-Pad.

The whole process of zooming is rather slow and doesn’t really zoom out very far, or as far as I would like it to do, to be able to view a web page comfortably. What I want to say is that it is a reasonably capable browser but it is not going to make you giggle with joy when you have to work with it. The Samsung T559 Comeback includes a GPS navigation system that you can use it for turn by turn navigation and search for things in your area and that kind of stuff, the GPS proved to be somewhat useful, it worked fine for me. Of course that like every 2010 mobile phone there is a media application. Even the media application is a little weird to work with but you will get used to it after you access it a few times.

/> The Samsung T559 Comeback plays the music very well it is also able to play your music in the background. The application from the camera is very easy to use, it has a very straight forward menu. You can take a still picture just by pressing the camera button or the O. K. button.

The photo application works both with the internal and the external display. The camera is able to shoot 2 mega pixel images, I would have liked it to have an auto focus function but it doesn’t If you open the phone you will see a micro SD HC card slot. The Samsung T559 Comeback mobile phone supports up to 16 GB of memory, so you can stock your photos and music without any problems. I didn’t like that the card slot is located under the battery, so you have to take out the battery to insert or take out your memory card. The Samsung T559 Comeback has a very interesting form, when I saw it I could bet my money on that this phone hasn’t got a QWERTY keyboard because it looks like some entry level mobile phone that you can get for free with a contract.

But this is the beauty of this model, it looks normal but hides some very interesting features. I would say that it is the slickest design that I have seen this year from Samsung.
